“For hundreds of years, canoe construction, sailing, and navigation have been a major component of life on Yap and its neighboring islands. This connection to the sea allowed our ancestors to create a powerful tradition that has lasted to the present day. With canoes they voyaged great distances over dangerous oceans, and even carried back to Yap the largest megaliths ever carved and transported in the Pacific, our Yapese stone money. The culture of canoes has always been a major component of our civilization, and we wish to preserve this tradition for our future.”
